create a folder in /tftpboot/fog/ called partedmagic, copy the partedmagic.iso file into this folder and also copy and paste the memdisk file found in /tftpboot/fog/

browse to /tftpboot/pxelinux.cfg/ and edit the 'default' file in there and add

Please remember that if you create a new folder on the tftp folder you will also need to include memdisk in the same folder! The link above also inlcudes a TFTP folder you can use to try on your own. It includes dban and dell diagnostics's .iso's.

Make Snapins Using FOSS

For this HOWTO I will be using Ubuntu 9.04 to create a snapin of Firefox 3.0.10 for Windows. The programs that I am using all have a Windows version so you can replicate what I am doing in Ubuntu in Windows if you are more comfortable with that.

Next we have to use 7-zip to pack the file. We use the -y switch for the self-extracting program.

I purposely choose a really simple example. Firefox is deployed much easier than this just upload the Firefox executable file to your fog server and then pass the -ms switch to make a silent install. However this gives a great overview on how to create snapins in a Linux environment. For more complex installs I end up having to use a Windows box and a great program called AutoIT the procedure is basically the same. Use 7-zip to create a self extracting archive and have it run a AutoIT script to finish the install. In my opinion this is much easier than trying to use install right and yields better results. Your mileage may vary.

Please also note you can use open source software such as [http://sourceforge.net/projects/sfxmaker/ SFX Maker] to complete the above process automatically.

It is very easy to customize your FOG server to match / reflect your place of work or taste.

Using a Snapin to update ntuser.man

I hadn't explored Snapins very much, but it recently occurred to me that they might help me deploy changes to the user profile on our lab computers. I thought I would share the way I got it to work.

A little background: Our school's computer lab runs Windows XP in a workgroup environment. I have been using mandatory profiles for a while to protect profile settings from being altered by users. There is a useful tutorial on mandatory profiles in Windows here: [http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307800]. The process is a bit tricky, but the main change to a profile is renaming its ntuser.dat to ntuser.man (ntuser.dat is a hidden system file that resides in the user's profile and contains registry data).

I wanted to be able to place a new version of ntuser.man in a read-only share on our NAS and push that file out to the clients in the lab. This is much faster than using FOG to deploy a new image every time I update a user profile.

First, I wrote a batch file to do this. I used xcopy <http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb491035.aspx> because it can handle hidden files. Here is the content of that file:

Next, I used a freeware tool called "Bat To EXE" [http://www.f2ko.de/English/b2e/download.php] to convert the batch file to an executable. B2E has an option to create a "Console Application" or a "Ghost Application." I chose the Ghost option.

Next, I used FOG's Snapin page to upload the EXE. I gave it a name, browsed to and uploaded the EXE and checked 'Reboot after install'.

Next, I assigned that Snapin to a test computer (edit the host in 'Host Management') and then chose 'Deploy Snapins' under 'Task Management'.

The computer rebooted after a few minutes and when I logged on to the host I found that the profile had been successfully updated.
